ABOUT THE SSO FOR GA

The Student Scholarship Organization for Greek Americans, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization based in Atlanta, GA. The SSO for GA was organized in 2009 in response to Georgia House Bill 1133 which was passed by the Georgia General Assembly and signed by Governor Sonny Perdue in May 2008. The SSO for GA was formed for the express purpose of providing Greek American families tuition assistance at Georgia’s non-public Pre-K, Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

The SSO for GA is qualified under Georgia's Tuition Tax Credit Scholarship program (HB 1133) which allows individuals and corporate taxpayers to receive a dollar-for-dollar income tax credit for donations made to the SSO for GA. The SSO for GA will use these donations to grant merit based academic scholarships to students enrolled in a Georgia public school or eligible to enroll in a Pre-K or Kindergarten program at a qualified private school of their parents' choice.

Each calendar year, and providing that there is room available under the $50 million annual cap on tax credits established by H.B. 1133, a married couple filing a joint return can re-direct up to $2,500 of their state income tax payments to the SSO. The maximum for an individual is $1,000. Corporations can receive a tax credit for amounts contributed to the SSO for up to 75% of their Georgia income tax liability or the actual amount donated, whichever is less.
